Wake held for Austin Marine
06:45 PM CDT on Saturday, May 31, 2008
A local family sets the record straight about what they believe is the cause of death of an Austin Marine found dead in his California barracks last week.
The autopsy is still pending on 21-year old Marine Corporal Chad Oligschlaeger.
His family and friends held the McNeil high school graduate's wake Friday evening at Cook-Walden funeral home in northwest Austin.
Some family chose to speak out at the Marine's wake about other reports of his death which they say are untrue.
"I'm seeing stories that you know have suicide, suicide, suicide and we're here to tell you that's not a fact, we know for a fact that he didn't commit suicide, it's pretty frustrating to see that, it's hurtful for the family" says Eric Oligschlaeger, Chad's father.
Chad Oligschlaeger joined the Marines at age seventeen and spent two tours of duty in Iraq.
His family says he saw unbelieveable attrocities and saw many of his friends and comrades killed in the line of duty.
The Oligschlaegers say Chad suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder, or P.T.S.D. and was taking several different types of medication. They believe his death was accidental.
Now some in the family are upset because they don't believe the military did enough.
"Chad did everything that the Marine Corps and the government asked him to do and we really feel that he asked them for something and they just kind of turned their back on him" says Byron Smith, Chad Oligschlaeger's uncle.
The Oligschlaeger family wants to form a support group to help other military families cope with P.T.S.D.
Oligschlaeger's funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at Cook Walden on Anderson Mill Road and Highway 183.
