APD issues warning about teens and alcohol

In a few weeks, thousands of high school seniors will receive their diplomas.
But along with those graduation ceremonies come parties, and the Austin Police Department is warning teens about the dangers of underage drinking.
Surveys show the problem of underage drinking is widespread in Texas, with more than a million underage youths having a drink every year.
Officers from APD and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage commission say kids and alcohol are a dangerous combination.
If a minor is caught with alcohol or drinking and driving, they could serve up to 40 hours of community service, pay hundreds of dollars in fines and lose their license.
"If alcohol is detected on your breathe you will be arrested," said Sgt. Jessica Robledo, APD. "Beyond the legal ramifications you run the risk of taking your own life or that of another. It's also important for parents to know if they plan on serving alcohol to minors at any celebration, they also could face legal ramifications."
Under the law, an adult cannot give alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 under any circumstance, even in their own residences.
You can be sued if you give alcohol to a minor and they, in turn, hurt someone, hurt themselves or damage property.
The TABC says agents will be on hand to go out to any underaged party that is called in by Austin police and officials say kids who choose to drink should be prepared to suffer the consequences.
