Three Austin City Council positions were up for grabs Saturday. Two were decided, and one will head into a runoff.

Incumbent Lee Leffingwell won easily over challengers Jason Meeker and Allen Demling in the Place 1 City Council seat.

Randi Shade defeated incumbent Jennifer Kim by 37% for the Place 3 seat. Shade and Kim had a heated campaign punctuated by Kim’s campaign using a controversial automated call to attack Shade. That call may have violated state laws, but no formal complaints or charges have been filed yet.

Of the six candidates vying to replace Betty Dunkerly in the place Place 4 seat Cid Galindo and Laura Morrison gathered the most votes and will head into a runoff race.

Urban planner Galindo wants to create seven mixed-use town centers along Austin's eastern edge. He believes the plan would reduce commuter traffic and increase affordability by having people live and work in one area. Laura Morrison’s housing initiative focused on making housing affordable, and preserving the older neighborhoods. Both candidates are taking Sunday off and will start campaigning again on Monday for the June 14th runoff election.
