The severe weather in North Texas has caused numerous cancellations and delays at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.  Tuesday night, KVUE received several calls from angry travelers who said they were forced to sit inside a plane for up to six hours after Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport was closed and their flight was diverted to Austin.

Passengers wait in line to speak to airline attendants at Bergstrom Tuesday evening. According to ABIA, 14 flights were diverted to Austin due to severe weather in Dallas.

“After about the third hour or so, there was no more food on the plane, no water, no drinks at all.  The restrooms were just disgusting,” said Rosanna Terrel, a passenger on an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to D/FW and on to Boston.  The flight was diverted to Austin because of severe weather at D/FW.

As of Tuesday night, Terrel’s flight was still in Austin, although passengers were finally allowed to get off the plane.

Another passenger told KVUE that seven American Airlines planes sat on the tarmac for hours because of bad weather.

But the wait didn’t end there.  In fact, many of those same airline passengers waited in line inside the airport, trying to book new flights after theirs were cancelled.

American Airlines confirmed that they had a number of cancellations, mainly of flights going in and out of Dallas.

Among those stranded were the Pats, a couple celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary.  They were supposed to be in Zurich, Switzerland on Tuesday night.  Instead, the couple was stranded and had no idea what they would do.

The passengers tell KVUE that American Airlines told them that all hotels are booked and that there aren’t any car rentals, either.

According to an ABIA spokesperson, 14 flights had been diverted to Austin, with nine of them still on the tarmac at Bergstrom.  All passengers had been allowed to leave those planes.
