Shady Grove RV Park residents pack up
06:38 PM CDT on Monday, March 31, 2008
It was one of the first RV parks in the city, and for many years those who chose to stay there enjoyed being close to Zilker Park and the rest of South and Central Austin.
Now what some call a piece of Austin's history is shutting down for good.
The few people left at the Shady Grove RV Park on Barton Springs Road are making final arrangements to move their Airstreams and RV's -- they have until midnight Monday night to get everything off the property.
A developer, Constructive Ventures, plans to build a condo community called Barton Place on the acreage.
The people that have to leave here are also not too happy they'll pay more at their new homes. At Shady Grove, they paid about $500 a month. Some say they'll be paying double or three times more.
Quite a few people have been concerned about the pecan trees that grace the property. The RV park manager says while one 200-year-old tree will be allowed to remain, five others will be transplanted to a park next door.
The rest of the trees will be cut down.
