Downtown getting free WIFI
03:24 PM CST on Wednesday, March 15, 2006
Free wireless Internet is coming to downtown Austin. Mayor Will Wynn made the announcement Tuesday night. Over the coming weeks, workers will begin installing the hardware on existing utility poles downtown. The signal should reach to the south end of Zilker Park, north to about 7th Street, forming a downtown corridor that will always be plugged in. "As opposed going hotspot to hotspot over town...now we're going to have this big fabric where you never have to leave one signal and go to the next signal," says Mayor Wynn. All of the hardware is being donated by Cisco Systems in conjunction with an upcoming technology conference. City leaders say the system should be up and running by May.
