More than 250 certified teachers in Austin Independent School District have a criminal history.

This is a follow up to a KVUE News exclusive report we brought you last month.

In February we told you a convicted felon was uncovered while the district implemented a new state law that requires fingerprint background checks on all certified teachers. An additional 30 misdemeanor arrests were also found.

Since our last report the district has checked the criminal histories of three thousand additional teachers.

An open records request revealed that as of February 20, 2008, of the 4095 fingerprints that have been processed so far:

  • 256 records came back with a criminal history.
  • 15 indicating a felony arrest.
  • 241 indicating a misdemeanor arrest.

AISD is still investigating to determine how many of these are arrests resulted in a conviction.

However, the district confirmed last month one convicted felon is still teaching; the felony that teacher had involved fraud. Officials said some of the misdemeanor convictions involve criminal trespassing, theft by check, DWIs and family violence. At the time, school officials said none of the crimes caught will result in automatic termination.

But the new law requires anyone convicted of a felony against a person, such as murder or sexual assault; or a felony against a child be fired.

The district will not release the names of the teachers or on which campuses they work, citing privacy concerns.
