Tornado clean up continues in San Marcos one month later
06:21 PM CST on Wednesday, February 28, 2007
Parts of San Marcos continued cleaning up Wednesday after a tornado ripped through the area last month.
The tornado that touched down in San Marcos in January may have been minor, but it left behind powerful images. Police cruisers buried under sheet metal; a trampoline wrapped around a tree. Recovery has been difficult for some.
"That was hard," Dianne Flack said as she wiped away the tears. Flack is the owner of Cowboy Style Furniture, one of the few San Marcos businesses that suffered extensive damage. The business now has to operate out of two temporary trailers until it can be rebuilt.
"It's so sad to sit here and you know you see the customers drive up and they're like, ahh, what is this? And turn around and leave," said Flack.
In the only neighborhood affected, repairs to damaged roofs were either well underway or already completed. Meanwhile, at the San Marcos Police Department, most of the 34 cars that were in either completely or partially damaged have been repaired or replaced.
But the building is a different story.
"This is what the 4 x 4's are for is to come in and literally hold the roof up," said Howard Williams, San Marcos police chief. There was so much structural damage done to one part of the building, that an entire wall has to be torn down and replaced."
"This is a major inconvenience I'll admit, but again, nobody injured, nobody killed, rather quick recovery process, it didn't stop us, we were still able to do our job. I think we're doing everything right," Chief Williams said.
Police are forced to follow strict state regulations when it comes to construction bids, so it'll be at least a few more weeks before repair work can begin.
