Mary Dodgen, the Tyler, Texas woman who investigators say was drunk when she drove her car into a group of people leaving a local concert in 2006, is dead.

Dodgen's failing health had delayed court proceedings in connection with the death of local attorney Jeff Wilson and the serious injury of 4 others. She died Friday shortly after 4 a.m. Dodgen had been staying with her son in Marble Falls and was scheduled to be in the Travis County Courthouse later this summer to be tried for intoxication manslaughter. Now, the widow of the man she killed, says her death will not help bring any closure.

Jeff Wilson is buried at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery. A soft sound of music fills the air because his grave surrounded by wind chimes. The news of the death of the woman who killed him rings hollow for his wife, Mandy.

“Kind of empty, it is not I don’t know how to explain, it doesn’t... solve the situation, it just faded away,” said Mandy Wilson.

Wilson’s family was preparing for a June trial, but a few days ago they were told Dodgen was on her death bed. She was last brought to court in a wheelchair January 24. Her appearance at the preliminary hearing happened only because Wilson’s family complained to the judge and to prosecutors about constant trial delays. Dodgen had pancreatic cancer. Prosecutors and her defense attorney reasoned she was too sick to face a trial, but that decision kept Wilson’s family from having any type of closure. For his wife, it made moving forward difficult, if not impossible.

"Yeah, and I haven’t even been able to get his marker because I can't -- I don’t know why it is so hard -- it is just a lot of energy put into this, trying to fight so hard to make things right, by getting Mary Dodgen to plead guilty," said Mandy Wilson.

Sitting next to Mandy Wilson as she spoke were friends Kim and Sigmund Bloom. They were there the night Jeff was killed and also were hurt. Both still find it hard to talk about the incident. Investigators say Dodgen was drunk July 3, 2006 when she drove her car into a group of people leaving a concert at the backyard. Dodgen had a blood alcohol level of .148. The bitterness of what happened then and what has happened now continues for Mandy Wilson.

“It is a blow, after blow, and that is kind of how I felt today, was just another devastating blow, sort of what else can happen,” said Wilson.

Among the items at Jeff Wilson’s gravesite is a plaque. The inscription on it reads in part, “You only get one shot at life, don’t waste it. “ Jeff Wilson wrote those words, now his wife will try to live by them. In doing so, Mandy says, she will continue her work fighting drunk driving.

“That is one of the most frustrating things is, he didn’t have to die, she made a choice,” said Mandy.

Senior Criminal Prosecutor Buddy Meyer declined an on camera interview, but did provide a statement that reads as follows:

“We extend our condolences to the families, and out of respect to the families have no other comment.”
