Bluebonnet forecast? Expect an average season

The first bluebonnet of the season has already bloomed at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Mark Simmons, an ecologist with the facility, says Central Texas should expect an average season for spring colors.

"To get early spring wildflowers, we need a good rain event every four to six weeks or so," Simmons said. "There has been a few gaps in the window in the last few months where it hasn't given us that."

Last spring was one of the best in years for the bluebonnets and other wildflowers. Simmons says it was due to the rain.

"Last year we had great rains in the fall and into the spring," he said. "That is what gave us such a spectacular display."

Ben Truong is looking forward to his tradition of the annual trek to see the flowers.

"Every year we make a trip down west to see the bluebonnets and the Indian paint brushes," he said.

This year it appears the best wildflowers will appear east of Interstate 35 because that area has seen more rain.

However, the rain Central Texas had over this past weekend should also help the spring wildflowers. Simmons says the showers came at just the right time.

"The bluebonnets need a pulse every four to six weeks, and we were a little overdue. So it came just in time I think," he said.

Most of the spring flowers peak in late March or early April. This year they could come a little early because of the warm temperatures Central Texans have been experiencing in the past couple of months.
