State historical association moving from Austin to Denton

11:37 AM CST on Thursday, January 31, 2008

Associated Press

AUSTIN -- The Texas State Historical Association is moving from The University of Texas in Austin to The University of North Texas in Denton.

The nonprofit group of historians publishes the Southwestern Historical Quarterly and the Handbook of Texas Online and puts on lectures and other programs.

The move ends the association's 110-year affiliation with UT.

The split followed a dispute over whether the association's 20 employees should be university employees.

The association was also unhappy that the university moved the group's offices from the history department to the Center for American History a few years ago.

A University official says UT wanted the group's workers to become university employees because of concerns about a private group using state-owned offices and other property.
