Wal-Mart opponents plan boycott

Opponents of a proposed Wal-Mart store at Northcross Mall plan to announce a boycott during a town-hall style meeting Wednesday night.

Responsible Growth for Northcross organizers say the store would be too big for the nearby North Austin neighborhoods and would bring too much traffic to the area. They also say the mall developers and Wal-Mart have not kept their promise to listen to residents' concerns.

Community residents will meet at St. Louis Catholic Church on Burnet Road, almost directly across from the Northcross site, to discuss what they want to do next. More than 500 citizens from the neighborhoods of Allandale, Brentwood, Crestview, North Shoal Creek and Rosedale are expected to attend.

"We have the power and we're going to exert it," said Jason Meeker, with Responsible Growth for Northcross. "If Lincoln Property and Wal-Mart is not going to listen to us, and if the city council isn't going to do what they should to tell Wal-Mart and Lincoln Properties that they're not going to be threatened by a lawsuit and tell them this does not belong in the City of Austin, then we're going to announce a boycott."

The boycott would be of all Wal-Mart stores citywide and would go on until the Northcross plans are withdrawn.

Dallas-based Lincoln Properties suspended activity at Northcross in December for 60 days in order to gather input from nearby residents, but with two weeks left in that moratorium, residents say meaningful discussions have not yet taken place.

Lincoln Properties invited Wal-Mart to build a 220,000 square foot supercenter at the site. Wal-mart calls the store, which will be two levels and have a parking garage, an "urban store."

Neighbors have a number of concerns about the development, including the amount of added traffic the Wal-mart will bring from customers and large trucks, the store's hours and its impact on local businesses.

Responsible Growth for Northcross will talk about a survey residents took January 13-14 about the Wal-Mart development, the legal battle ahead as well as plans for fundraisers.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in Wozniak Hall at St. Louis Catholic Church at 7601 Burnet Road.
