Central Texas counties included in disaster proclamation
02:28 PM CST on Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Governor Rick Perry issued a state disaster proclamation in 152 Texas counties Wednesday after wildfires posed a threat across the state.
The proclamation makes affected counties eligible for state assistance.
Six Central Texas counties were included in the list: Hays, Lampasas, Llano, Mason, San Saba and Travis.
Burn bans were in effect in all counties listed.
Fires burned around Central Texas Tuesday, including three in Hays County -- all were contained. The Hays County Sheriff Office said there was a large grass fire west of Dripping Springs near Henley.
Firefighters from different departments around the area helped battle the blaze and were able to contain it. Officials estimated the fire damaged approximately 200 to 250 acres.
The other Hays County fire burned 75 acres near Hays County Acres Road, east of Dripping Springs. The third fire was near Wimberley.
“I urge Texans to exercise extreme caution as conditions remain favorable for the development of wildfires across the state,” Perry said in a media release.
Officials said windy and dry conditions contributed to the fire danger. Seven Texas Military Forces utility helicopters were activated and stationed in Austin, San Antonio and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
