Applewhite could return to Longhorns

A major decision could bring Major Applewhite back to the University of Texas.

Major Applewhite, one of the most popular longhorn players in recent years, is once again the big man on campus, at least on Tuesday. Applewhite was on the Forty Acres to interview for an opening on the UT coaching staff. Applewhite spent most of his visit inside the athletic office complex at the south end of the football field. As construction crews continued to close in the north part of the stadium, it appears Applewhite may soon fill in a void in the coaching staff.

Applewhite is a favorite son of the UT football program. He was a Longhorn quarterback from 1998 until 2001. He still owns the school single season and career passing records. Students who follow the program say it could be nice having Major back home.

"I think he will be a good asset to any coaching staff, especially coming back here where he played," said UT Student Jonathan Harris.

Sources say Applewhite is being offered the running backs coaching position and could also be given the title of associate head coach. Taking the job could be considered by some as a step down. He currently makes about $250,000 as the offensive coordinator for the University of Alabama. If a hiring takes place, Athletic Director Deloss Dodds says it won't happen until at least Thursday. That because the job must be posted for a certain amount of time and also because Head Coach Mack Brown is out of town on a recruiting trip.

Longtime UT booster Frank Denius dropped by Tuesday afternoon to see the coach -- instead he got a Major surprise.

"He would bring many attributes and good things to the University of Texas, but you know it has to be a good fit for both the university and Major," said Denius.

If Applewhite is offered the job and takes it, he will owe the University of Alabama $50,000 -- a buy-out penalty in his contract with Alabama that will most likely be picked up by UT boosters.
