Suspected robber arrested after North Austin bank holdup
05:07 PM CST on Friday, January 9, 2009
Austin police arrested one man and identified another one in the city's first two bank robberies of 2009.
A bandit held up the Austin Telco Federal Credit Union Friday afternoon on Research Boulevard in North Austin. Police say he escaped with the bank's money, but his freedom didn't last long.
Police arrested the suspect after a three-minute car chase through the streets of South Austin.
The chase ended in an accident. A person in the suspect's car was injured in the crash. Police aren't saying whether it was the bandit who was hurt.
It's the second bank robbery so far this year in Austin.
Thanks to tips from CrimeStoppers, police think they've identified another bank robber.
On Wednesday, a man robbed a Chase Bank branch on North Lamar. After interviewing the teller and looking at driver's license and police photos, investigators said they believe the man is 41-year-old Nick Leonares Fairchild.
Police have issued an arrest warrant. Anyone who knows where Fairchild is should call CrimeStoppers at 472-TIPS.
