The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio received a multi-million dollar grant from an Austin couple.
Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long donated $25 million to the UT center on December 31.
According to the Health Science Center $6.25 million will help fund research of diseases that most affect South Texans, including diabetes.
Another $6.25 million will help with faculty recruitment and retention.
The remaining half of the money will go toward scholarships.
It matches the largest single gift in the center’s history.
The Longs’ previous donations to the Health Science Center have provided scholarships for medical students who plan to return to South Texas to work.
UT’s Board of Regents approved renaming the Health Science Center central campus in San Antonio.
It will be called the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Campus.
