The Austin Housing Authority is offering a new down payment program for
first-time homeowners.
If the homeowner makes his mortgage payments on time for five years, he
won't have to pay back the $10,000 loan.
About 1,500 Austin families are living in public housing. They make
$9,000 to $13,000 a year.
This loan program gives those families more than a financial boost. It
gives them a place to call home.
The first family has closed on their home under that program. Sixteen
other families are on the waiting list.
