South Austin SWAT call ends peacefully

AUSTIN - A man was hospitalized after a SWAT call near an area of businesses in the 700 block of East Ben White Boulevard Thursday morning.

Austin police said they were dispatched to the area just before 8 a.m. following a report that a man was standing at a business brandishing a knife.

While police did not specify which business the man was located near, a Google maps search revealed there is a Walmart Super Center and Jersey Mikes Sub near the area.

When police arrived on the scene, they said they found the man on top of a shipping container, still holding the knife. Because the man was armed, police said a SWAT team was called in to assist.

SWAT eventually de-escalated the situation and took the man into custody without incident, police said.

No one was injured. However, police said the man was hospitalized for a mental evaluation.

No charges are pending as of Thursday morning.
