After two months of planning and community input, the Round Rock Independent School District has officially approved boundary changes for their 11th middle school, Pearson Ranch.
Thursday, the district announced three major changes from their October 20 proposal:
- Residents who live in Highland Horizons will continue to attend Cedar Valley Middle School, where previously it was suggested for them to relocate to Pearson.
- Students who live on the north side of Grand Avenue Parkway will continue to attend Chisholm Trail, opposed to Deerpark.
- Those in the Ranch at Brushy Creek who were set to attend Walsh Middle School will now go to Cedar Valley Middle School.
"Growth is always going to create change, so we knew there was going to be some addition as you add in a new school, you're going to have to change some demographic,” said Simon Guevara, a resident who lives in The Woods subdivision.
The father of five was relieved to hear his neighborhood wasn't going to be split up like the proposal suggested back in September.
“What I am most thankful for is that they put a proposal out that they thought through quite a bit, and then really thoroughly listened to the community and our responses and how we suggested, and they moved which is great,” Guevara said.
Corey Ryan with Round Rock ISD says they understand not everyone will be happy with the alterations, but the board worked hard to figure out how to keep schools from overcrowding.
"Rising eighth graders will still be able to attend their existing school, that's part of our regulation, this will start next year for the seventh and sixth graders in on out,” Ryan said. “We felt this was the best plan that melted the quantitative and qualitative approach and brought heart to what was best for our community.”
The new proposal will continue to send students from Fern Bluff Elementary School to Chisholm Trail Middle School, and students from Old Town Elementary School will go to Walsh Middle School.
The Northwoods at Avery Ranch subdivision as well as apartment complexes around Parmer Lane East of U.S. 183 will continue to go to Pearson Ranch Middle School. Pearson Ranch will also receive students from Forest North Elementary School.
The district says most of the students who attend Joe Lee Johnson Elementary STEAM Academy and all Wells Branch Arts Integration Academy students will be sent to Deerpark Middle School.
No changes were made to elementary or high schools.
