Rabid skunk found in Burnet

BURNET, TEXAS - A skunk that was captured by police last week has tested positive for rabies, Burnet police said Monday.

Police said the Texas Department of Zoonosis – a part of the Department of State Health Services – confirmed the diagnosis in the skunk. Police were called to a home along East Johnson Street on March 1 for a possible sick skunk. Police said the state confirmed the diagnosis on March 3, and that this is the first skunk in the City of Burnet that has tested positive for rabies in 2017.

Burnet police are reminding citizens to make sure they get all of their pets vaccinated, and to not leave any food out on the back porch or on the ground.

Those with questions on where they can take their animals to be vaccinated for rabies can call the Burnet Police Department at 512-756-6404.
