Police: Student, 8, finds loaded gun in school bag, parent issued citation

NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS - A New Braunfels parent was issued a citation Tuesday after an 8-year-old child found a loaded gun in her backpack when she opened it on campus.

According to the New Braunfels Police Department, at around 7:50 a.m., police were dispatched to County Line Elementary School in the 1200 block of West County Line Road for a report of a child who found a firearm in her school bag on campus. Police said the child opened up the bag to start the school day when she found the loaded gun.

The student then told her teacher, who took the bag and immediately turned it over to campus administration. The police were then called. NBPD said "at no point was the firearm displayed and students were likely unaware that it was ever even on campus."

When NBPD spoke with the student's parent, the parent said it was inadvertently left in the child's bag during a recent move.

"The parent took full responsibility for the incident and, because there was no intent to commit any other offenses, (the parent) was issued a citation for Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child," a class C Misdemeanor, according to NBPD.
