Carjacking suspect who led police on chase identified

AUSTIN - In an affidavit released Thursday, police have identified someone who is accused of carjacking a person in Central East Austin Wednesday.

The victim told police he was driving his vehicle when he started to notice that a truck was following him. He then ended up at Decker and Loyola lanes at around 3:15 a.m. The victim said that two people got out of the truck with pistols and fired at him. One of them told him to run. As the victim ran, he looked back and saw one of the suspects -- identified by police as Carl Cleveland -- get in his vehicle as both vehicles drove off.

Austin police located the stolen car about 30 minutes later on I-35 in South Austin. However, Cleveland allegedly refused to stop when confronted by police. The driver then crashed in San Marcos along I-35 and fled on foot. Officers located Cleveland after a search with STAR Flight and a K-9 unit.

He has been charged with evading in a motor vehicle and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Cleveland's affidavit did not mention another arrest that was made.
