Police ID suspect, release details in SE Austin shooting

A man was shot and killed at an apartment complex in South Austin and police say they don't have anyone in custody.

AUSTIN - Police have identified a suspect and released details on a shooting in southeast Austin over the weekend.

17-year-old Julian Medrano was arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of 43-year-old Dunieski Castillo-Leyva.

APD said they were called to the 2500 block of Anken Drive, near South Pleasant Valley and East Oltorf, around 1:15 a.m. July 9.  Leyva was found dead in a vehicle with "obvious trauma to his body."

After an investigation, Austin homicide detectives determined that Levya and two of his companions responded to a sexually-oriented ad on the "Back Page" website. The group drove to an apartment located at 2501 Anken Dr.

During the transaction, an argument started over services that were not received and Levya and his friends demanded their money back. The argument turned violent and Levya and his companions left the apartment.

Levya ran to his truck, got into the driver's seat, and started to back out when Medrano ran in front of the truck and fired one shot into the vehicle. The gunshot struck and killed Levya. The truck continued rolling backwards and hit several vehicles before it came to a stop.

Additional charges against others involved in the murder are expected as the investigation continues.
