Couple displaced after South Austin house fire

Family's house burns down in South Austin

AUSTIN - A couple is without a home in South Austin after a fire ripped through Sunday afternoon.

It happened in the San Leanna neighborhood near Manchaca. Fire crews got the call around 5 p.m.

As soon as fire crews arrived, they saw the blaze shooting out of three areas of the house. Ninety percent of the home is damaged.  The couple inside was able to get out safely with only a minor injury.

The cause of the fire its still under investigation. AFD stress the importance of your smoke detectors by replacing the batteries often. In this case, they believe it could have given the couple an earlier warning.

"The homeowner discovered the fire before the detectors went off. It’s a good message to have,” Austin Fire Battalion Chief Calvin Poole said.

The couple is staying with family members in the meantime.
