MANOR, TEXAS - Police have accused a mother of strangling her 13-year-old daughter in order to get her to clean the kitchen in their Manor home.
According to the affidavit for Sakeenah Laquanda Barber, 35, officers were dispatched to their home on Sunday to respond to a report of an assault. When officers spoke with the daughter, she said that her mother initially strangled her in an attempt to get her to clean the kitchen.
While Barber went outside to smoke a cigarette, the daughter told police that she called her aunt to tell her about what allegedly happened. After Barber came back inside and saw her daughter talking on the phone, she allegedly started strangling her with one hand while punching her with the other hand. The daughter told police that her mother had such a firm grasp around her throat that she had trouble screaming.
At some point during the struggle, the daughter was able to escape and get to a neighbor for assistance.
Police arrived later and noted bruising and injuries consistent with what the daughter said had happened, according to the affidavit.
Online records with the Travis County Jail show that Barber is currently in custody as of Tuesday morning. Police filed two charges against her and set her bail at 40,000.
