Pedestrian killed in S. Austin may have been intoxicated

AUSTIN - Police are investigating a South Austin crash in which a pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV Sunday night.

Austin police said the crash happened near South 1st Street and St. Elmo Road around 9:55 p.m. Sept. 18. Austin-Travis County EMS said the man, who was believed to be in his 50s, died at the scene. Authorities identified the man as Michael Joseph Howard, 53.

APD said their preliminary investigation shows the SUV was traveling northbound on South 1st at St. Elmo with a green light. Howard was trying to cross and fell down twice. Police said the driver did not see Howard until the last second and was unable to stop in time. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene after the crash.

Police said they are investigating the possibility Howard was intoxicated at the time of the crash, and toxicology results are pending as of Sept. 27.

Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-5594. This is the 50th fatal crash and 51st fatality on Austin roads in 2016.
