Man charged with intoxication assault after crash injures girlfriend

AUSTIN - A 32-year-old man has been charged with intoxication assault after his girlfriend sustained serious injuries when their vehicle crashed into a utility pole Saturday afternoon.

According to the affidavit for Eric Shin, he was driving southbound at about 40 mph on Center Line Pass near Parmer Lane when there was a curve in the road. At this point, Shin allegedly drove off of the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Shin then called police, and when medics had arrived, they found his girlfriend had a broken left femur, a fractured back and fractured ribs. According to the affidavit, she had to undergo surgery.

When police spoke with Shin at the hospital, the officer said he could smell "an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from him" and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

According to online records with Travis County Jail, Shin is not in custody as of Monday morning.
