Man arrested after Smithville standoff

BASTROP, TEXAS - An man was taken into custody after he barricaded himself inside a building in downtown Smithville on Wednesday morning.

Police said they were called to the Comfort Café around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an armed man threatening to hurt himself. Authorities said the man - identified Wednesday afternoon as Robert Wayne Stevenson - had been in a confrontation with his ex-wife before the incident.

Officials locked down two blocks in every direction and DPS SWAT teams were called. Stevenson surrendered and was taken in custody approximately one hour after negotiations began..

“He is currently is processed for burglary of a habitation at the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office and further charges are pending after a complete investigation. We are grateful it came to a peaceful conclusion and that Mr. Stevenson can get the assistance that he needs,” said Smithville Chief of Police Michael Maugere.

Police added no one was hurt during the standoff, and that the downtown area has reopened.
