PFLUGERVILLE - A room full of high school students each with a special musical talent. Classes are over for the day for the Hendrickson High School Hawk Band, but homework remains.
352 band members are studying to be the best high school band to perform in front of millions. They're marching in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York next Thursday. Band Director Garth Gunderson describes it as a huge milestone.
"We really didn’t think we were going to get selected the first time we applied. We thought it would take a couple of years for them to gives us a nod," Gunderson said.
It’s the first time the band has performed in the Parade. The Macy’s Parade Band Committee chose the bands by their stage presence, musical abilities and marching talent. Trumpet player Hannah Weber spoke to KVUE Friday.
"We're playing some really cool pieces like Deep in the Heart of Texas, and Sweet Caroline, and I think it's going to be a blast," Weber said.
The band is also relying on a replica of the Macy's logo to help with their routine. All of the equipment they'll use will be packed on two trailers and ready to hit the road.
The band leaves on Sunday. Memories will be made along the way.
