AUSTIN - After Hurricane Harvey made landfall, the City of Austin has opened a list of shelters for evacuees, according to the Travis County Emergency Operations Center.
People who evacuate due to the storm can go to the Delco Center at 4601 Pecan Brook Drive in Austin for shelter. Other shelters that were operating in Austin included LBJ High School at 7309 Lazy Creek Drive and Toney Burger Activity Center at 3200 Jones Road. As of Tuesday evening, Lanier High School at 1201 Payton Gin Road was on standby.
The Austin City Council voted Thursday to lease a 64,000-square-foot facility and a 96,000-square-foot facility in southeast Austin as shelters for evacuees instead of the Austin Convention Center as previously planned. The council said the city is not seeing as many evacuees as projected and estimated the current number between 1,500 and 2,000. The shelter will be at 7000 Metropolis Drive. The shelters previously mentioned are to be consolidated into these facilities.
The City of San Marcos opened the San Marcos Activity Center at 501 E. Hopkins at 11:30 p.m. Aug. 26 as a shelter for San Marcos residents who want to voluntarily leave flood-prone areas.
After Highway 71 was closed, the City of Bastrop opened a shelter at the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop located at 1201 Main Street.
The Smithville Recreation Center, located at 106 Gazley St. in Smithville, opened August 25 for Bastrop County residents who wish to voluntarily evacuate, especially from areas that have been historically prone to flooding. Small household pets will be accepted. There are limited cages, so please bring a cage if you have one for your pet.
