AUSTIN - With an increase in visitors this weekend for the Formula 1 races, law enforcement is preparing to fight a potential increase in sex trafficking that is typically seen when big events come to town.
Police said everyone needs to be aware that this could be going on. However, they think this year might not be as bad as previous years because next weekend Formula 1 heads to Mexico City, taking traffic away from Austin.
That being said, police said they plan to assign extra patrols to the race this weekend and will be paying close attention to websites like Craigslist and Backpage.
Employees with Refugee Services of Texas said they have staff ready to help any victims they find.
In previous years, area hospitals have requested their help with victims during Formula 1 weekend and this year staff are on call to help again.
If you think you've witnessed sex trafficking, or know someone who needs help, you can call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
