HUTTO, TEXAS - Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Michael J. Smith has resigned from the Hutto City Council.
The city said in a brief release that on March 2, “Mayor Doug Gaul was notified of allegations of past due taxes owed to the City of Hutto” by Smith that would “make him ineligible to serve as a council member.”
“After consultation with Michael to verify the facts and consultation with our City attorney, Michael Smith has submitted his resignation effective immediately,” Gaul said. “We would like to wish Michael the best of luck in the future and thank him for his years of service and dedication to the City of Hutto.”
Smith’s bio on the city website states he was first elected in June 2009, with reelections in May 2011 and May 2014. He became mayor pro-tem in 2015.
