Hays County Clerk warning citizens of phone scam

HAYS COUNTY - The Hays County Clerk is warning county residents of a phone scam in which scammers are impersonating the County Clerk's Office.

"Several residents have reported that 'Hays County Clerk' pops up on their caller ID and someone claiming to be the County Clerk's Office, or a collection agency connected with the Clerk’s Office, demands payment over the phone to settle a lawsuit or to pay a fine,” Hays County Clerk Liz Gonzalez said. “We want to make sure people understand that the Clerk’s Office does not handle lawsuits – we only keep Court records – nor do we ask for or accept payments over the phone.”

The scam is similar to IRS and federal courts scams that have been circulating recently where scammers use computer programs to manipulate caller IDs and demand money from the victim. Residents are reminded to research any caller asking for money and contact the organization directly to see if they actually owe money.

If you believe that you have been the victim of one of these scams, contact your local enforcement and file a scam complaint with the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division
