San Marcos man killed in fiery crash, police say

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - A 43-year-old man died after a crash and vehicle fire in San Marcos late Monday night, police said.

San Marcos police said officers were called to the area of McCarty Lane and Hunter Road around 11:30 p.m. Monday after a parent reported her adult son had taken her vehicle. The officers located the vehicle, which had run off the road, struck a tree and was on fire, in the 2600 block of Hunter Road.

Additional officers responded and used fire extinguishers from their patrol vehicles before removing the driver, identified as Gilbert Coy of San Marcos. Police said Coy was unresponsive when officers arrived and CPR was started after he was extricated and moved away from the car. SMPD said firefighters and paramedics who arrived on scene were unable to revive Coy.

The preliminary investigation shows Coy’s vehicle was traveling toward San Marcos on Hunter Road when it left the roadway for unknown reasons, traveled approximately 200 feet and struck a tree. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.
