San Marcos warning of fake metering box calls

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The City of San Marcos is warning utility customers of a scam in which they are told they need to pay a hefty fee to replace outdated meter boxes.

According to the city, scammers call customers and tell them their meter box is outdated and that they need to pay $400-800 to exchange it. The scammers have been providing customers an out-of-town phone number and telling potential victims to call and pay the fee.

“These calls are a scam, and residents receiving such a call should ignore it,” the city said. They added City Utility Customer Services will not call customers for payment over the phone or request wire payments.

Those who have been called or approached for questionable bill collections or fees are asked to call police at 512-753-2108, check with Utility Billing at 512-393-8383 or the appropriate government office.
