For the first time, Wreaths Across America is coming to the Texas State Cemetery and local organizations are trying to place a wreath on every veteran headstone for the holidays.
"We're remembering all of the veterans who died in the wars," said 7th-grader Cutter Knauth.
Knauth is a part of The Regent School of Austin Boy Scout Troop 25, one of the organizations raising funds for Wreaths Across America.
"It makes me feel good that our country is excited about our veterans and that we're remembering them," Knauth said. "Getting them out there, not only raising money but also volunteering their time, is very gratifying."
Three weeks ago his troop started sending out emails asking people to purchase wreaths.
"They each cost $15, but if you buy three then you can get them for $10 each," Knauth said.
More than 2,900 veterans are buried at Texas State Cemetery and the Boy Scouts are hoping to have a wreath on every headstone by December 17. So far, just over 1,200 wreaths have been purchased. Now, there's only 1,700 more left to go.
The deadline to donate is this Saturday and the wreaths will be placed on headstones on December 17.
