APD conducting extended ‘No Refusal' over Fourth of July

AUSTIN – Police announced Tuesday that it will conduct an extended No Refusal for the Fourth of July holiday.

APD is already conducing a No Refusal initiative each weekend through September 2017, and this extended initiative will take place 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. between June 30 and July 5. During these periods, police said “detectives will be available to assist in applying for a blood search warrant in those cases where a suspect under arrest for DWI refuses to provide a voluntary sample of breath or blood.”

“No Refusal is not about making as many arrests as we can,” said Lt. Blake Johnson with APD’s Highway Enforcement Unit in a statement. “It is about keeping unsafe drivers off Austin roadways and keeping the public safe. No Refusal ensures that we have solid blood alcohol content evidence of every arrest and as such enhances our ability to prosecute people who drive drunk and put others in danger.”

APD added the July 7-9 No Refusal will operate 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
