AUSTIN - The early Sunday morning fire at a South Austin apartment complex has been ruled accidental, the Austin Fire Department said.

AFD said the fire at The Woods on Barton Skyway was ruled accidental from improperly discarded smoking material. Eight apartments were destroyed in the fire that started around 12 a.m. Sunday at the complex, located in the 2900 block of Barton Skyway.

Nine people were displaced by the fire, and two dogs and two cats died in the fire, AFD said. Damage is estimated at $1.25 million to the building and contents. The building is listed as a total loss.

Residents in the apartments destroyed by the fire are being assisted by apartment complex management and the Red Cross.
