FBI reports record number of background checks in 2015

WASHINGTON -- 2015 was a banner year for gun sales based on the record number of firearm background checks run by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the FBI, there were 23,679,492 firearm background checks run through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in 2015. The FBI said that doesn't mean there's a one-to-one correlation, meaning that there may not have been over 23 million guns sold last year.

The FBI data showed that in December 2015, there were 3,314,594 firearm background checks, a record for any month. The FBI data, which goes back to November 1998, indicates that there have been at least 1 million background checks in the United States every month since October 2008, just before President Barack Obama was elected to his first term.

President Obama is expected to announce new measures he will carry out with executive orders this week to deal with guns in America. The president was meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch Monday to discuss his impending presidential executive actions on guns.
