AUSTIN – One woman has died and two others were injured in a crash in downtown Austin on Thursday morning.
Austin-Travis County EMS said they were called to the area of the northbound Interstate 35 service road and Cesar Chavez around 8:35 a.m. Oct. 12 for the crash. APD Lt. James Misula said two cars crashed at this intersection, sending one of the vehicles off the road into a grassy area under the I-35 bridge. The car that lost control struck three people, killing a woman believed to be in her 40s and hurting two other people in their 50s. Misula said those two sustained minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital.
The other vehicle in the crash stopped after driving a short distance and called 911. Neither driver was injured in the crash.
Misula said this bridge area frequently has a lot of homeless people and can have about 5-15 homeless people during a normal morning. While he does not know yet if the people struck were homeless, Misula said it's important to drive extra cautious, especially during rush hour.
“Drivers needs to be very careful when they are driving through here," Misula said. "There’s not only a lot of vehicle traffic, there’s also a lot of pedestrian traffic as well.”
Cesar Chavez was closed in both directions at Interstate 35 for several hours. TxDOT will go out to the intersection to see if there is any damage to the road to make sure it's not hazardous to other drivers.
The name of the woman killed has not been released, pending notification of her family.
