Debris falls from downtown building

Debris fell from a building on the corner of 5th and Colorado on Friday.

A vehicle was damaged when several large pieces of debris fell from a building in downtown Austin Friday afternoon.

One vehicle was struck by the debris, which fell from a building under construction at Fifth Street and Colorado. No injuries were reported.

A statement from Lincoln Property Company, which owns the building, said that the debris fell when a window washer applied "an undue amount of force to one awning, causing a total of five to fall. The application of force on the awnings is not in-keeping with our protocols."

Lincoln Property said they are investigating the incident and are grateful that there were no injuries.

Austin Police closed the 200 block of West Fifth Street "due to construction debris falling from building," but the road reopened around 6:30 p.m.

David Nelson tweeted that seven to eight pieces of glass fell and landed on cars.
