Austin City Council to consider park changes

AUSTIN – The city council will consider several recommendations to keep big events like the ACL Festival and South by Southwest from disrupting the lives of Austinites.

The biggest change will impact parking. Currently, someone illegally parked on the side of the road faces a fine of $20, but the change recommended to the council could increase that penalty to $250. Illegal parking has been a problem for people living around Zilker Park, especially during festivals.

Council will also consider illegal vendors who come out to make a quick buck on tourists, and the noise events make. Current code allows events to go until 2 a.m., but one recommendation the council will consider will be to move that up to 11 p.m.

City council is also expected to consider a recommendation that would limit the number of events held in Fiesta Gardens, Auditorium Shores and Zilker Park. Officials are worried too many events leave the parks too trashed.

The Austin City Council meeting starts at 10 a.m. June 8. TAP HERE for the agenda.
