FREDERICKSBURG - Community members in Fredericksburg are coming together to rebuild the iconic Turner Hall, which burned down more than three months ago.
Turner Hall, located at 103 West Travis, was destroyed on June 19 in a fire that police believe was intentionally set. The social dance club stood in Fredericksburg for more than 100 years.
Martha Durst, who sits on the Turner Hall Board of Directors, says it's important to preserve the city's historic ties, especially to its German heritage.
"Once you lose it, you never get it back. I mean my husband grew up knowing German before he spoke English," Durst said. "The community is trying to stay with our roots."
On Sunday, board members will host an all-day benefit from noon until 6 p.m. to help raise funds to rebuild Turner Hall. The event will feature live music, food and beverages, an auction, activities for kids and a "42" tournament.
The city of Fredericksburg officially named Sunday, September 25, Turner Hall Day.
Board members hope to rebuild at the beginning of 2017 and re-open Turner Hall in early 2018.
