'Cancer lifer' Holley Kitchen passes away

Tribute to Holley Kitchen

CEDAR PARK, Texas – Holley Kitchen, the woman whose battle with metastatic breast cancer went viral in 2015, died early Tuesday morning.

News of Kitchen's passing was posted on her Facebook page around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Kitchen was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer when she was 39, and underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. When her cancer returned, she posted a video to educate others about the illness.

In the video, Kitchen held up note cards about her battle with metastatic cancer as Rachel Platten's Fight Song played in the background.

In the video, she explained that metastatic breast cancer has "no cure" and kills 40,000 people a year.

"My treatment will never, ever, ever, ever , ever end," one of the cards said. "Until my journey on Earth is over."

The video was viewed more than 50 million times and garnered the attention of Good Morning America, who interviewed her.

She said she was compelled to talk about her battle in part because "it is frightening."

In the video, Kitchen went over a few things that many patients are sick and tired of hearing, like, "you're so young," and "keep fighting."

She held up pictures of her two young sons and her husband and said she battled every day for those she loves.

"My mission is not to shame anyone, just to educate everyone, because before I was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, I didn't know any of this," she said in one of the cards.

In the end of the video, Kitchen refers to herself and others battling terminal cancer as "cancer lifers."

Kitchen is survived by her husband and two young sons.
