Bastrop police investigating death after double hit and run

BASTROP, TEXAS - The Bastrop Police Department is investigating a double hit and run after which the victim succumbed to his injuries, police said.

According to police reports, the victim, identified as 23-year-old Benjamin Avelar, was walking northbound on State Highway 95 near Fairvew Cemetery on Monday night when he was struck by the first vehicle heading north. Police said the victim was later struck by a second vehicle heading north, neither of which stopped to give him aid.

The victim was taken via ambulance to a local hospital with extensive injuries and later transferred to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin where he died, police said.

The BPD is currently investigating the incident and is seeking the public's help with any information on the two vehicles. Information can be submitted anonymously through Bluebonnet Area Crime Stoppers at 866-930-TIPS or online here.

Police said callers are eligible to receive a reward of $1,000 for information leading to an arrest or grand jury indictment.
