Austin tech professor weighs in on new iPhones

The company unveiled three new versions, including the iPhone 10.

AUSTIN - Ten years ago, Apple introduced its revolutionary iPhone.

And Tuesday, the company unveiled three new versions – including the iPhone X (pronounced “ten”).

Inside the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple's Cupertino, California campus, it first introduced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

One takeaway from those phones is portrait lighting on the cameras.

Another is a glass front and back on the phone.

Twitter users sarcastically pointing out – they can now shatter the front and the back.

But one of the more popular features is the wireless charging.

The price tag starts at $699 for the iPhone 8 and $799 for the iPhone 8 Plus.

But before the presentation ended, there was “one more thing,” CEO Tim Cook said.

That one more thing is the iPhone X (again, pronounced “ten”). The price starts at $999.

And the home button? It's gone; it is replaced by an edge-to-edge screen and face recognition technology.

Apple said the iPhone is locked until you look at it, and it recognizes you.

Yes – your face unlocks the phone.

And there are also animated emojis that mimic your facial expressions.

Eric Nordquist, associate professor at UT's School of Information said this technology has been around for years.

"I think Apple, like they usually do, waits for the user experience to reach a level where they then use technologies and features on their phones,” said Nordquist. “I think that's what we're seeing here."

He said he thinks Apple lived up to the 10-year hype. But one of his criticisms is the lack of the home button.

"Anybody who's used an iPhone, you quickly use the home button … as kind of a tactile locator,” said Nordquist. “Is the phone upside down, what part of the phone am I touching? Whenever it's in my pocket, when I'm dealing with the phone at night."

With a nearly thousand dollar price tag – Nordquist said the iPhone X is geared more toward the tech-savvy.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 8 start next Monday, and the phones will be hitting shelves on September 22.

Pre-orders on the iPhone X begin October 27.
