Austin shelter issues 'code red,' asks community to take in animals

AUSTIN - The Austin Animal Center is asking for the public's help after issuing a "Code Red," which means their shelter is at "critical capacity."

Due to the capacity issues, the shelter can only take in "sick and injured animals and true emergencies" temporarily. The center is asking for people to either adopt at a fee of $20 or to foster senior pets and medium and large dogs and cats. The shelter is open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"It takes a village to keep making Austin America's largest No Kill city," Austin Animal Center said in a Facebook post Tuesday. "We're saving more lives than ever before with 98% of the cats and dogs in our shelter being saved over the past three months, but we can't do it without your help!"
