Victim identified in South Austin murder

AUSTIN - Police have identified the man who was fatally stabbed at a south Austin apartment complex Sunday night.

Austin police said they were called to a reported stabbing at an apartment complex along the 500 block of East Stassney around 9:20 p.m. Oct. 8. The responding officers said they observed witnesses attempting to save Fabian Gutierrez, 23. Austin-Travis County EMS transported Gutierrez to St. David's South Austin Medical Center, where he died from his wounds shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

Police said in an afternoon release that witnesses told them they observed a physical disturbance in the parking lot of the complex between the victim "and two other men who may also have been Hispanic." The men were seen driving away in a red Dodge Ram pickup truck that officers located and have since impounded.

APD said detectives believe the victim and the other men knew each other, and that they are working to establish the motive and identities of the men.

Anyone with information on this murder is asked to call the APD Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588, or CrimeStoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
