AUSTIN - A group of volunteers is making sure the children of soldiers stationed at Fort Hood have a merry Christmas.
Tuesday afternoon they sorted and packed thousands of gifts and Wednesday they plan to drop them off at the military base. For more than a decade Tom Ramsey and volunteers with his non-profit Celebration of Love have been running this Christmas toy drive.
"It all started with the war, 9/11" Ramsey said. "As the troops were coming back from the war we thought, 'What can we do as an organization to thank our military family?' We started with 1,000 families and now we're up to 2,200."
This year, Celebration of Love collected 9,000 toys, about 300 bikes and 2,200 frozen turkeys along with all the fixings for families. Ramsey said the families couldn't be more thankful.
"It's amazing how the first thing that comes out of their mouth is 'Why are you guys doing this?' Well why shouldn't we?" Ramsey said.
Volunteers said it's the least they can do for the men and women who put their life on the line to keep our country safe.
