Austin firefighter gets PETA award for saving 5 animals in 1 week

AUSTIN - A "superhero" firefighter from Austin is getting an award from PETA after he rescued five animals in one week, the organization said.

Firefighter Alex Baumeister successfully resuscitated a dog with an animal oxygen mask after rescuing it from a burning home. He also saved a cat and a 6-foot snake during fires. Baumeister came to the rescue again when two kittens had gotten themselves wedged inside a wall. And this all happened between May 1 and May 5.

PETA said that, along with a "Compassionate Fire Department" award, Baumeister and the Austin Fire Department will receive a package of fire-alert stickers to distribute to the public, framed certificates and a box of vegan cookies.

Just this past Monday, AFD rescued another kitten from the side of a busy Austin highway.
